Vibroacoustic Therapy

Qi Gong

Various cultures around the world have used sound vibrations for healing across physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions for hundreds of years. Sound vibrations are also used in modern times for both diagnostics (e.g. diagnostic ultrasound) and therapy (e.g. therapeutic ultrasound).

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) is a non-invasive intervention that employs sound and gentle mechanical vibrations applied directly to the body, using a variety of different equipment. We use tuning forks therapeutically in our practice.

General and psychological effects

Sound vibrations elicit physiological responses in the body that influence parameters such as muscle tone, blood pressure, heart rate and the function of the autonomic nervous system (among other beneficial changes). These generalised, systemic effects can very quickly induce a state of deep relaxation, especially when the tuning forks are used around the head and chest.

Localised healing effects

We select specific frequency tuning forks whose sound waves can penetrate muscles, ligaments and tendons to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the targeted area, particularly when we are treating a local problem, such as a spasm (i.e. muscle knots), injury or a painful joint. The sound waves can also cause the tiny gas bubbles around the tissue to expand and contract (cavitation), which stimulates healing on a cellular level.

The efficacy of VAT has been successfully researched in various complaints, from physical ailments such as pain to mental/emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression. Vibroacoustic therapy can, however, benefit anyone (not only those struggling with their physical or mental health), since it evokes profound relaxation, rapidly reduces acute stress and promotes general well-being.

We find it exceptionally good for loosening muscle spasms and knots and treating body pain. However, everyone that receives this therapy comments on how deeply relaxed the vibrations make them feel and they always ask for more. In fact, many people report that the Vibroacoustic Therapy is their favourite part of their treatment

We include vibroacoustic therapy (using tuning forks) with all 45 minute, 90 minute and 120 minute aromatherapy massages and you can request it to be included in your 60 minute reflexology (all at no extra cost). You can learn more about our rates for aromatherapy massages and reflexology here.
